With all the talk about reparations being paid to descendants of slaves in this country (well, it has expanded beyond that initial qualification – we’ll deal with that in the future though), I thought it necessary to inform people that slavery has not been abolished in our Republic. Oh no ladies and gentlemen, slavery is still alive and well. The plantations of old have changed, as well as the specific type of people enslaved.
Let me break it down for you. Slavery’s ugly head started to reemerge in our Constitutional Republic in 1909. That is when the Congress proposed the 16th Amendment to the Constitution. That amendment states – “The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.” It was eventually, and unconstitutionally, ratified in 1913.
Now, the framers of the Constitution understood exactly what a tax imposed upon the citizens’ income would result in. That is exactly what we see today. A federal government that has grown in size and scope beyond that of the original intent of our Founding Fathers. That is why our Constitution puts so many restraints on the federal government. They understood that a strong central government ultimately leads to tyranny.
In the words of Thomas Jefferson – “Working like gravity, a little today, a little tomorrow. Like a thief over the field of jurisdiction, until all shall render powerless the check of one branch over the other and shall become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated.” If you really look at the involvement of the government, especially the federal government, in the lives of the citizens today – you can recognize the truth of Thomas Jefferson’s words.
The 16th Amendment removed the last vestige of liberty the citizens had in our Republic. As we have spoken about before on the podcast and in this blog, what we have now is an illusion of freedom that the government must maintain to keep their new system of slavery in place. Yes, the 16th Amendment turned every American citizen into a slave. For 120 years, the American citizens have been slaves to the new plantation owners – the Federal Government. The government is knee deep into each of our sweat equity – often before we even get to see the fruits of our labor through the income tax withholding programs. Taxes and fees imposed by the government are the shackles and chains that bind us. Let’s break it down, shall we?
Income tax – You worked hard and now you got paid. Uncle Sam and his greedy little nephews will now take a percentage, up to 50% of your income.
Sales tax – Now you want to spend some of that income that is left over after the government confiscated it through withholding? Well, the government will now charge an additional 5% to 10% (or more) on what you purchase.
Property tax – Since you have saved a portion of your income after paying the income tax and scrupulously saving by only purchasing necessities instead of wants and avoiding some sales taxes, you now want to purchase a home instead of renting. Well, the government will now charge thousands of dollars each year for the privilege of “owning” your own home. Which, by the way, you never really own, because once the mortgage is paid off – you still must pay property tax on it. Essentially, when you stopped renting from an individual, you just switched landlords. Going from a citizen to the government.
Capital Gains Tax – Now you want to invest some of your leftover income (after rent/mortgage, sales, and income taxes have been paid). Outstanding, you get to take all the risk but, if you make any money on those investments, the government will take another 20% to 50% of those gains. If you lose money? Well, if you lose money through investments, you can only deduct a fractional portion of those losses. Government is like a casino; the house never loses.
Inheritance (Death) Tax – After you worked hard all of your life, saved money and built-up assets that you want to leave to your family to help secure their financial future, your death has a big surprise. If you happen to die with too much money and too many assets, well the government will come after those as well – heaping a tax burden on the family members you left behind. Making ownership of money, assets an illusion. Each of us are slaves to the government, up to and after our death.
Reparations – If they come about, it will just be the government reshuffling the assets and knowing all along that the Government will still get its cut.
Where, in any of what I just described, is the freedom our forefathers fought the most powerful empire on the planet to obtain for their descendants? We need to wake up and realize our government is the modern-day plantation owner and each of us are just slaves for Uncle Sam and his greedy nephews.
